The short answer
A slab leak can be fixed three ways: open the slab and repair the pipe, reroute the line around the slab, or repipe part or all of the house. The right path depends on where the leak is, how old the pipes are and whether other leaks are likely.
Prices differ a lot between these paths, so a plumber should explain all three before you decide. We do not post a flat number because it would ignore your layout. Call (916) 312-0578 for a written quote after the leak is located.
Three repair paths compared
Each path trades cost, disruption and long-term reliability.
| Path | How it works | Best when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spot repair | Cut the slab at the leak and fix the pipe | One leak, sound pipes elsewhere | Concrete work and flooring repair. |
| Reroute | Abandon the leaking run and run new pipe overhead | Leak is hard to reach or pipes are failing | Pipe visible in walls or attic. |
| Repipe | Replace lines throughout the house | Several leaks or aging pipe | Highest scope and disruption. |
Dixon rules that affect a slab repair
Source type: City of Dixon permit handouts. The City of Dixon's permit handouts say replacing a concealed pipe with new pipe needs a permit, while stopping a leak in a pipe does not. A reroute or repipe therefore goes through the Building Division, and the work is inspected.
The water line handout calls for Type L copper below a building and copper with no joints under a slab. Plastic supply pipe is not allowed in that location. The handout also requires a 15 minute pressure test at working pressure after a repair. These rules shape what a plumber can offer and why a reroute is common.
A reroute or repipe follows the California Plumbing Code, which is based on the Uniform Plumbing Code (UPC). Section 604.1 is the supply pipe rule the City of Dixon's handout cites, so the new run has to match it.

What changes the repair price
Several factors move the number up or down.
Questions to ask before approving
A slab repair is a large decision, so make sure the quote answers these.
- Which of the three paths is being quoted and why.
- Whether flooring and drywall repair are included.
- Whether the permit and inspection are included.
- What warranty applies to the repair.
- How long water will be shut off.
California law caps a down payment on home improvement work at 10 percent of the price or $1,000, whichever is less. Check a contractor license at cslb.ca.gov.
Insurance and documentation
Many homeowner policies cover sudden, accidental water damage but exclude gradual leaks and the pipe itself. Some pay for tearing out materials to reach a covered leak. The wording varies, so read your policy and call your agent before the work starts.
Photograph the damage, keep the detection report and save every invoice. A written explanation from the plumber helps if the insurer asks what happened.
What a reroute looks like
In a reroute, the plumber shuts off the leaking line under the slab and runs a new line through the attic or walls to the same fixtures. The old pipe stays in the ground, capped at both ends.
The work takes a day or two for a single run. New pipe is visible in the attic, and small patches are needed where it enters walls. That is the trade for avoiding a trench through finished flooring.
Restoration after the repair
Flooring is where many homeowners are surprised. A spot repair can mean removing tile or hardwood over the leak and replacing it. Matching old tile can be hard, so ask whether spare tiles exist and who handles the work.
Plumbers repair pipes and typically coordinate other trades for concrete, flooring and paint. Ask for a clear line in the quote showing what is included, so there are no gaps when the plumbing is done.
A pressure check helps
The City of Dixon's 2024 report lists system pressure between 52 and 62 pounds per square inch. Many homes have a pressure regulator that should hold household pressure steady. A cheap gauge on a hose bib shows your actual pressure.
If your reading is far above the city range, the regulator may be failing, and high pressure stresses every pipe. Mention the reading to the plumber, since it can affect which repair makes sense.
How to protect your home during the work
Cover furniture in nearby rooms with plastic. Move rugs and fragile items out of the work area. Concrete cutting makes dust, so seal doorways with plastic sheeting if the plumber has not already done so.
Ask where the plumber will stage tools and haul debris. Keep children and pets away from the work area. A clean, clear space helps the plumber finish sooner, which keeps labor in check.
Where this fits in a bigger plan
If this is the first leak in a newer house, a spot repair may be all you need. If you have had several, ask about a repiping quote at the same time so you can compare. Start with our slab leak repair page to see how we handle the work.
We serve Dixon, Vacaville and Davis. Leaks that start in the yard are covered by water line repair.
Slab leak repair cost questions
Stopping a leak in a pipe is exempt, but replacing concealed pipe with new pipe needs a permit under the City of Dixon's handouts.
It depends. Rerouting avoids concrete work but puts new pipe in walls or the attic. A plumber can show you both.
A spot repair or reroute is often done in a day or two. A repipe takes longer. Ask for a schedule.
Usually yes, though water is off for part of the work.
The City of Dixon's handout calls for copper with no joints under a slab, and does not allow plastic for supply in that location.
